Big-name roasters get all the press, but some of the most interesting coffee in the country is being roasted by people you've never heard of — in converted mills, suburban garages, and beachside shops. Here are 10 that stopped us in our tracks.

Wavelength Coffee Roasters
Shirley, MA · ~96 followers
One of the first commercial-scale all-electric coffee roasters in the US. They roast on an Air Motion Roasters AMR-6 fluid-bed machine powered by on-site solar panels, and package everything in reusable steel cans instead of bags.
Standout coffee: El Salvador / Carlos Pola Anaerobic Pacamara ($25)
Founded by Jim and Deanna Varney after Jim sold his product development company. They operate from a converted mill complex in Worcester County and participate in a community solar program. If sustainability matters to you, these are your people.

Woman-owned roaster founded by Mirian Diop, who holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern and left the oil industry to roast coffee. 'Kati' means 'knowledge' in Lelemi, the language of her Ghanaian parents.

Beyond great coffee, Kati runs the Kati Educational Scholarship Fund for local university students and donates from their 'Grounds for Grace' blend to support people with developmental disabilities. Founder Graham Goshinmon lived in Central America for nearly 10 years and has direct relationships with Guatemalan coffee farmers. The name means 'new story' — marking his family's move from Guatemala to Missouri.
